I reviewed Progressive Download a few months ago and complained about problems downloading large files. I will say that PD definitely shines in many areas (restart, resume, scheduling, filtering) so by all means there is more to consider here than just speed.

If you are Firefox users, you should check out DownThemAll (unavailable for Safari or Chrome). I just happened to notice today on MAcUpdate that PD had been updated and thought I'd try it again. I had first tried PD back in the Snow Leopard days, had pretty much the same conclusion, that there were faster alternatives. From what I could see, PD was establishing multiple connections. I used PD with all default settings OOTB, freshly installed, same with DownThemAll. I have a rated 50Mbit line, so that should not be a factor, and prior to starting the tests, I ran and got 49 Mbs down and 7Mbs up, which is nominal for my ISP connection outside of peak times. I ran the tests around between 1am and 2am to eliminate overall web traffic as a factor and slowdown on my ISP's network. I chose this file because it's large (almost 1 GB) and hosted on Apple's servers, hopefully eliminating slowdown due to host server.

I ran some download speed tests of various products, Windows and Mac. The following is not a criticism of PD, just offering some speed test results. If you have Little Snitch (and every Mac user should), it would be intgeresting to see what IP addresses this program contacts outside of the sites you actually visit. Look at the release history since April of 2019 to April 2021, basically every release just ways "Bug fixes and stability improvements. Specifically, it says they won't share with any entity that doesn't have 'ADEQUATE CONTROLS IN PLACE.' which is basically a legal disclaimer as there is no definition of what 'adequate' means.adequate can mean whatever they choose to define it to mean. Read the Privacy Policy VERY CAREFULLY IN PART "If you are located outside Russian Federation and, please note that we transfer the data, including Personal Data, to Russian Federation and process it there." The program also collects Cookie information, in addition to ".mobile device unique ID, the IP address of your mobile device, your mobile operating system, the type of mobile Internet browser you use, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data." The company can share any and all of this info with 3rd parties, the Privacy Policy is carefully worded, but if you read between the lines and analyze, there is nothing that explicitly says that the company WON'T share any of this data. Note: Progressive Downloader is free, but you can support the developer by buying the application from the Mac App Store. Browse and download files with double click or using drag and drop. You can also do a similar operation with any text or html file. Drag and drop a part of text with hyperlinks on the application badge to download them.

Automatic search for different locations of the same file to take the fastest one. Control the order of your downloads by changing download priority. Application downloads different parts of the file at the same time to make the downloading process faster. Any interrupted download will be automatically resumed when your system wakes up or the application relaunches.
